White Peony Chinese Medicine - Laurel Turk, Lic. Ac.
What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit will last 90 minutes and will include a thorough discussion of your health history, your current health concerns, and an acupuncture treatment. There will be adequate time to answer any questions you may have. After discussing your health condition and goals, I will do a traditional Chinese diagnosis, which includes looking at your tongue, feeling your pulses, and, with your permission, palpating the neck and the abdomen. These are all ways that the Chinese gathered information about the body before the existence of modern science and laboratory testing.

This will be followed by an acupuncture treatment, in which needles will be inserted into acupuncture points.  Usually the needles are retained for about 25 minutes while you rest on a massage table. The points I use most commonly are located below the knees and below the elbows, so removal of clothing is not usually necessary. I also commonly needle the abdomen, so it helps to wear pants and a shirt or skirt, rather than a one-piece dress so I can access the abdomen easily. If removal of clothing is necessary to reach other parts of the body, you will be covered with a towel or a blanket. Most people find resting with the needles in to be very relaxing, similar to the effects of having a good massage.

It helps to integrate the treatment if you avoid strenuous exercise for an hour or two after the session. You will possibly be prescribed a Chinese herbal formula to take daily.

"Laurel Turk has helped me for almost 12 years with problems ranging from endometriosis to digestive disorders to dry hair. Both her dedication and her gifts are extraordinary. Instead of trying to categorize me in as little time as possible, she has frequently delved deep into the complications of my problems, often reading up on them between appointments, taking note of my response and adjusting her treatment accordingly. She has gone far beyond the call of duty for me on several occasions, giving me advice from long distances when I couldn't get in to see her, and sending me herbs through the mail.
What I like best about Laurel is that she really listens. She never makes me feel foolish for seeking help for small things, and has a great deal of patience. Problems that other doctors would write off as trivial complaints caused by 'stress' or 'getting older' make sense to her in terms of my total condition. Best of all, she is able to address them.

Whether it is exhaustion, sweatiness, constipation, acid reflux or light-headedness, it all seems to add up, and furthermore she has something in her bag of tricks that can help. She is also good with serious debilitating illness. After her endometriosis therapy I was cramp-free for two years. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been in Laurel's care. I've never had another doctor like her: neither a western doctor nor an alternative caregiver. She has years of experience, a well of patience, a remarkable depth of compassion, and a wonderful sense of humor!"
